It’s no secret that the job market is tough. But what many people don’t realize is the problem isn’t just with the job market – it’s with them. And this couldn’t be more true when it comes to getting marketing jobs as well. What most applicants do is try to find jobs that match their current experience. However, it’s actually better to upgrade your skills and experience so better marketing jobs match you instead. So if you really want to know how to find a new career in marketing , read on to learn how.

How To Find A New Career In Marketing

1. Determine your ideal career and work day

The first step in finding a new and improved career in marketing is clarity. Get clear on what it is that you want. And I don’t mean just a job title, either. I mean figure how you want to spend your days and what kind of company you want to work for.

Think carefully about what it is that you love to do. Do you like being creative and working with a team to come up with new marketing campaigns? Or do you prefer working with numbers and analyzing data to see what’s working and what’s not?

There are so many different marketing roles out there, and it’s important to figure out which one is the right fit for you. Once you know that, you can start targeting the right companies and the right jobs.

2. Figure out the skills and experience you need

Now that you know what you want, it’s time to figure out what you need to make it happen. This is where many people get stuck because they don’t know what steps to take next.

Basically, you need to make sure that your skills and experience match up with the career/job you want. For example, if you’re trying to get a job as a creative director but have no experience in that role, you’re going to have a hard time.

The best way to do this is to either get a job in a related field or get some experience through internships or side projects. For example, if you want to be a social media manager but have no professional experience, you can start by managing the social media accounts for your friends’ businesses or volunteering for a non-profit. Or, if you want to be an SEO specialist but don’t have any experience, you can start by reading some books on the subject and teaching yourself the basics.

Essentially, you need to make sure that you have the skills and experience that are required for the job you want. Otherwise, you’ll never even get your foot in the door.

3. Create a plan and stick to it

Plan on a desk

Now that you know what you want and what you need, it’s time to put together a plan to make it happen. This is where a lot of people get overwhelmed and give up before they even start.

At one point, my own marketing career goal was to be making at least 70k and working remotely so that I could relocate to where I wanted to live. So this is how I articulated and “reverse-engineered” that goal:

  1. I want to live in in my target city, working from home, and making 70k
  2. To do that, I need to be making at least 55k to justify such a pay increase.
  3. To be making at least 55k, I need to sharpen my core skills around marketing technology and web design.
  4. To sharpen those core skills, I’m going to start a side hustle so that I can practice them with real projects.

When I got crystal clear with my goal and created this plan, it only took me a year to achieve it. Not only that, but I found a job that EXCEEDED my goal. I was hired to be a Director of Marketing Operations and was paid 80k a year instead of the 70k I targeted. So don’t sell yourself short – get clear on what you want, create a plan (like the one I listed above), and then go for it!
