Technical Marketing – An Awesome Career For Any Marketer

Work from home

If you love working from home, then you’ll be happy to know that many technical marketing jobs allow you to do just that. It’s almost like the two go hand in hand. That’s because if you’re working in technical marketing, then the organization you’re working with is accustomed to using all sorts of tech, including tools that are conducive to a work-from-home lifestyle.

Plus, today’s technology makes it easy to stay connected and collaborate with co-workers no matter where you are. You don’t need to worry about commute times or office politics. You can just focus on doing your best work.

This aspect allowed me t0 get out of the heat of Phoenix to move to Boise, Idaho. (A place I had wanted to move to for years.)  I can’t begin to tell you how much I love the scenery and weather here. And it’s all thanks to the fact that I found a profession that was in alignment to my goals. I was literally able to do my job from anywhere in the world that I wanted.

Discover the nuts and bolts of how different companies operate

With technical marketing, you get to learn about the inner workings of many businesses. You’ll get to see how different companies operate and how they market their products or services. Why does this matter? Because understanding how businesses work can give you a big advantage when it comes to marketing them. Not to mention all that learning is another arrow in your quiver for your next gig.

I’ve worked with companies in a wide range of industries, from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies. And each one has its own set of challenges and unique way of doing things. In learning about the different ways businesses operate, you will eventually be able to tailor and hone your marketing strategies for any possible scenario.

As a result, you may have achievements similar to mine, such as being able to say that you supported the sales of over $30 million, annually. Impressive numbers like that don’t happen unless the business has solid systems and processes in place. Someone’s gotta be the one to implement such scalable systems, and the tools of technical marketing is the way to do it.

High-demand skill with low supply

It’s worth mentioning that technical marketing is also high-demand skill set with a low supply of providers. In other words, there are more businesses that need good technical marketing help than there are people to do the work. That’s good news for you because it means there’s a lot of opportunity in this career.

I’ve found that the demand for technical marketing expertise is only increasing as more and more businesses realize the importance of marketing. If you’ve followed my content for a while, you may have heard me talk about easily making 6 figures in marketing. Well I believe there’s And I believe that the demand will continue to grow in the years to come. If you’re curious about a few examples of the types of jobs technical marketing includes, these should give you an idea:

  • Email marketing manager
  • CRM manager
  • Marketing Technology Specialist
  • Technical Operations Specialist

Of course, this is just a small sampling of the types of jobs that are out there. If you’re interested in a career in technical marketing, then I encourage you to explore all of the different options that are available.

Learning the many tools has its perks

Another great thing about technical marketing is you’ll get to learn how to use many different tools and software that help grow businesses. These days, there are all sorts of marketing automation tools, email marketing platforms, contact management systems, and more. Gaining a working knowledge of more tools makes you a formidable technical marketing specialist and will open a lot of doors in your career.

I’ve personally found that learning how to use all of these different tools has been a huge help in my career. Not only has it made me more efficient and valuable, but it’s also literally taken me places. It wasn’t until I became a seasoned technical marketer that I began to travel the country in support of my employers. By extension, I’ve attended countless meetings and many multi-million dollar events. And you wouldn’t think it, but this career has also put me face to face with celebrities and business gurus such as Kevin O’Leary, Dave Ramsey, Gary Vaynerchuk, Peyton Manning, other NFL stars, and more. (Some of which later became my clients!)

Another perk of technical marketing has to do with what you’re actually accountable for. This field tends to be a sweet spot in marketing where you’ll KILL IT if you’re a nerd that loves tech, but aren’t interested in worrying about the typical stresses of marketing such as budgets, KPIs, ad conversion rates, etc.

In other words – despite it being a high-demand field, it’s relatively less overwhelming than other areas of marketing. My long-running joke was that I make my living as a “monkey behind the curtain” because my job was to have fun building crazy cool stuff.

Great annual salary

Finally, you should know that these jobs come with great salaries. The pay range for a high-level technical marketer is $80,000 – $120,000 per year. And depending on your experience and skills, you could even make more than that. (I have!)

I can confidently say that if you’re looking for a career that comes with a great salary and plenty of opportunity, then technical marketing makes for a pretty sweet gig.
